The print reproduces a drawing by Sergei Korolkov showing prisoners driven to the brink of death by hunger in forced labor. It is credited to the U.S. Information Agency, the federal government's overseas information service, and is dated around 1951. Its caption tags point to labor camps, prisons, mining, and communism, subjects that Western governments in the early Cold War used to portray the Soviet system as one built on coerced labor. The date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
