A pen-and-ink drawing, worked over pencil and heightened with white, pairs a drunk driver with the Grim Reaper, a figure long used to stand for death. The sheet is undated, but its catalog range places it somewhere between the early 1930s and the mid-1950s, a period when automobiles became common in American life and traffic deaths drew growing public concern. Safety campaigns of those decades often used blunt, sometimes grotesque imagery like this to link drinking with the road and to warn that a single bad decision behind the wheel could be fatal.
