Currier & Ives's lithograph of Stonewall Jackson's death sets its scene at the Confederate general's final hours, a subject the firm returned to in several prints about the Civil War's famous commanders. Jackson, mortally wounded by friendly fire at Chancellorsville in May 1863, died eight days later, and the print was issued in 1872, nearly a decade after his death. Its sentimental treatment reflects a postwar market in which Northern publishers sold romanticized images of both sides' heroes to a broad audience. The record gives no artist's name, so the composition is best read as a product of the firm's commercial lithography rather than a documented eyewitness view.
