The Dutch title, *De vlugt van 't pausdom uit Engelant*, roughly means "The flight of the papacy from England," and the sheet names four figures: Louis XIV, James II, the Jesuit Edward Petre, and Pope Innocent XI. It belongs to the flood of anti-Catholic propaganda that followed the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when James II fled England and found refuge in France. Petre, who had advised the king on Catholic affairs and sat on his council, drew much of the Protestant suspicion aimed at the court, and Dutch printmakers, many sympathetic to William of Orange, eagerly circulated such attacks. The sheet is dated 1689, the year William and Mary took the English throne.
