This engraving reproduces a portrait of Martin Van Buren painted by Henry Inman, a founding member of the National Academy of Design, and engraved by G. Parker. It appeared as a frontispiece-style illustration in William M. Holland's *Life and Political Opinions of Martin Van Buren*, published in 1835 or 1836. Those years fall in the middle of Van Buren's rise from New York politics to the vice presidency under Andrew Jackson and then to the Democratic nomination for president, so the image served as campaign-era visual propaganda. Printed portraits like this one circulated widely, giving voters who had never seen the politician a face to associate with his record.
