Willis Van Devanter (1859-1941) was a Wyoming lawyer who went on to serve as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1911 to 1937, and this halftone portrait preserves his likeness from that long career on the bench. Van Devanter was known for his mastery of procedure and for his influence on the Court's conservative bloc during the New Deal years, when many of his colleagues and the Roosevelt administration clashed over economic legislation. The print is a photomechanical reproduction, a method that made photographs of public figures cheap to publish in newspapers and magazines of the era.
