This portrait shows Sir John Walter Huddleston (1815-1890), whose knighthood is recorded in the title. The picture was taken by the London studio of Lock and Whitfield, a firm known for its portraits of prominent Victorians. It was printed as a woodburytype, a photomechanical process introduced in 1864 that produced continuous-tone images with a rich, fine-grained surface and far better permanence than ordinary silver albumen prints. Its date, given as between 1865 and 1880, places it in the decades when such carte-style studio portraits and their reproductions were widely sold and collected.
