John Adams, the second president of the United States, appears here as an engraved portrait taken from George Bancroft's multivolume History of the United States, where it accompanied volume IV, published in Boston by Little, Brown & Company in 1874. Bancroft's work was one of the most widely read American histories of its era, and its illustrations gave readers a face to attach to the founders whose debates over independence and the new federal government the text described. Adams, who was born in 1735 and died in 1826, served as a leading advocate for separation from Britain and later followed George Washington into the presidency.
