Seymour Parker Gilbert, the American who served as Agent General for Reparations, appears in this 1930 portrait, taken when reports suggested he might leave his government post for a position with the Morgan banking firm. Gilbert had supervised Germany's reparation payments to the Allied powers since the Dawes Plan of 1924, a role that placed him at the center of postwar European finance. The picture captures a figure whose work linked American banking with the difficult diplomacy of rebuilding Europe after the First World War.
