Rather than a record of the event itself, this print reproduces a painting by William R. Leigh, an American artist known for western and historical scenes, that shows Paul Revere riding through the night to warn colonial militia that British troops were marching toward Concord. Revere's ride on April 18, 1775, became national legend largely through Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1861 poem, and painters returned to the subject often. The photoprint was made by Peter A. Juley & Son of New York, a firm that photographed artworks for reproduction, and its date of about 1953 comes from a caption card that the record marks as unverified.
