The Conversion of St. Paul is an engraving by Lucas van Leyden, the Dutch printmaker who was active in Leiden and became one of the most admired engravers of the early sixteenth century. The plate is signed with his monogram and dated 1509, when he was still a teenager, which makes it an early and precocious work. Its subject comes from the Acts of the Apostles, where Saul is struck down on the road to Damascus and converted to Christianity. Van Leyden's fine, crisp burin lines give the scene its clarity, and the print is a useful example of how Northern European engravers were developing their craft at the start of the Renaissance.
