Few battlefield deaths were reproduced in print as often as that of James Wolfe, the British general who was mortally wounded on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec on September 13, 1759. He fell at the moment of victory over the French under the Marquis de Montcalm, a win that gave Britain control of the city and, soon after, of New France. Benjamin West's 1770 painting of the death, which showed the officers in contemporary dress rather than classical robes, made the subject famous and prompted many engravings. No date is recorded for this impression, so it is best read as a later rendering of an event that held a lasting place in British imagination.
