Few battlefield images from the Civil War were drawn on the spot, and this pencil and Chinese white sketch on olive paper, dated June 27, 1862, shows the Battle of Gaines' Mill in Virginia as an artist saw it while the fighting was still unfolding. The title points to the moment of greatest tension: Confederate troops moving forward to seize Union artillery pieces that had been disabled and left behind. The battle was part of the Seven Days' Campaign, a series of engagements near Richmond in which Robert E. Lee's army pressed McClellan's Union forces back from the capital. The small olive-toned sheet, with its soft white highlights, gives a quick, field-sketch sense of the chaos around the guns and the horses that pulled them.
