Few titles on a wartime wall are as direct as *Soldiers without guns*, which tells the viewer at once that not every man in uniform carried a rifle. Adolph Treidler, a commercial illustrator who produced many posters for the federal government during the Second World War, made this color poster for the U.S. Army, printed in Washington in 1944 when the army needed the large support force that kept combat troops supplied, healthy, and moving. The poster treats noncombat work as service worth honoring, a message likely aimed at potential recruits and at a public whose backing the war effort depended on.
