George Rogers Clark is the subject here, the Virginia-born frontiersman whose campaigns in the Illinois country during the American Revolution helped bring the region under American control. Clark led a small force that took the British posts at Kaskaskia and Vincennes in 1778 and 1779, and his actions gave the United States a claim to the Northwest Territory in the peace negotiations that followed. Lithographic portraits of him were produced in the 19th century, when his reputation as a Revolutionary hero was being revived. The caption card for this print records no date, so its exact origin is uncertain.
