Photographed late in a long life, the historian George Bancroft (1800-1891) was nearly ninety when this portrait was probably made, around 1890. He spent decades on his multivolume *History of the United States*, the first volume of which appeared in 1834, and his work shaped how many Americans understood the nation's founding. Bancroft also served as Secretary of the Navy under President James K. Polk, where he founded the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845. The print belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, a body of portraits by a photographer who documented many prominent Americans of the period.
