Frederick Bancroft, billed on this color lithograph as "prince of magicians," is promoted in a large sheet measuring 76 by 102 centimeters. The Strobridge Lithographing Company, with shops in Cincinnati and New York, printed it, and the firm produced many of the theatrical and touring show posters of the 1890s. Posters like this were the main advertising tool for traveling stage magicians, who depended on bold color and dramatic display to fill a house for a single engagement. The copyright notice dates the work to 1895, when Strobridge registered it with the U.S. Copyright Office.
