Edward, Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, sits for this group portrait with his traveling suite, dated around October 13, 1860. He was nineteen and on his first extended tour of North America, a visit that drew large crowds and heavy press attention in the United States. Mathew Brady's New York studio made the picture as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs mounted on card that were viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth. Such cards were sold widely, so the image reached many households that would never have seen a royal visitor in person.
