The title, *Fording Salt River*, borrows the American phrase "up Salt River," meaning headed for defeat, and it suits an 1848 cartoon crowded with presidential hopefuls. James Baillie published this New York lithograph, which is signed with reversed initials, H.B., for H. Bucholzer. Its figures include Henry Clay, Zachary Taylor, both Van Burens, Horace Greeley and Cassius Marcellus Clay, alongside references to the Free Soil Party and the White House, reflecting the divided politics of that election.
