Currier & Ives produced this c1870 lithograph under the generic title "Southern river scenery," so its subject is a landscape rather than a named place or event, and the print's value lies in how it packaged an idealized South for a national market. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that ran the most prolific lithographic shop of the nineteenth century, sold such views to households across the country, many of them as cheap, colorful wall pieces. Scenes of broad rivers, lush banks and leisurely boats were a staple of the firm's catalog, and after the Civil War they often offered a soothing picture of rural calm. The entry in the Gale Research catalog raisonné, no. 6031, lets researchers place it within the firm's output.
