Its title, "Southern volunteers," is set in quotation marks, and that irony drives this 1862 political cartoon from Currier & Ives. The Confederacy began conscripting men into its army in April 1862, so the phrase mocks the claim that Southern soldiers had enlisted freely when compulsion was in fact compelling service. Currier & Ives sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, and prints like this one used caricature to argue that the Confederate war effort depended on coercion. The draft listed among its subjects ties the print to the debates over forced service that shaped wartime politics on both sides.
