A pen-and-ink style drawing titled "The signal officer off duty" shows a soldier asleep, with the scene tied by its record to Rappahannock Station in Virginia, dated February 8, 1864. Signal officers, who sent messages by flag and lamp between positions, often worked long hours in exposed spots, so a picture of one resting on a winter camp night captures a quieter side of the war than battle scenes do. The drawing is one of the Civil War items given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919, part of a collection of wartime sketches that record camp life as well as combat.
