Unlike most pictures in this group, which show troops and camps, this one turns to the inside of a small dwelling, focusing on its fireplace. The drawing is dated April 25, 1864, and places the scene at Culpeper Court House, Virginia. Union forces occupied the town for much of 1863 and 1864, and the Army of the Potomac used the area as a base in the months before the Overland Campaign began that May. Soldiers and visiting artists often sketched the buildings and everyday life they encountered in occupied Virginia towns. The title uses the period's language, which reflects the attitudes of its time. The sheet came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919 and belongs to a larger Civil War drawing collection.
