Going up Salt River" uses a phrase that meant political defeat in the 1840s, so the title is the cartoon's joke. The lithograph places five public men in one scene: Henry Clay, William Henry Harrison, Martin Van Buren, Daniel Webster and Henry A. Wise. Published by John Childs in New York in 1840, it belongs to the flood of satirical prints that accompanied that year's presidential contest. The record tentatively credits the drawing to Edward Williams Clay. That fall, Harrison defeated the incumbent Van Buren, which gives the print's mockery a clear political target.
