Going to the trot" points to harness racing, in which horses pull light two-wheeled carts called sulkies and are judged on a steady trotting gait rather than a gallop. Trotting matches drew large crowds in the United States around 1870, and the sport's popularity made scenes of travel to the races a common subject for printmakers. The record links the copyright deposit to a shelflist card naming Wm. C. Robertson, but that attribution is unverified, so the maker is best treated as uncertain. The vehicles, clothing and roads in such scenes often show that a day at the track was an outing in its own right.
