Thomas Worth, the illustrator behind many of Currier & Ives' comic sporting scenes, signed this lithograph, which carries the cheerful instruction "Ready for the trot: bring up your horse!" Published in New York around 1877, it belongs to the firm's late-1870s run of color prints celebrating the horse as a symbol of leisure and rivalry. Trotting races on dirt tracks and along city roads were a popular pastime then, and Currier & Ives sold such scenes to a broad middle-class audience eager for lively depictions of everyday American pursuits.
