The caption card identifies the sitter as Hon. Randolph Strickland, a representative from Michigan, which sets this likeness apart from the many other portraits of officeholders in the collection. The engraving was made by H.B. Hall & Sons, a New York firm that produced engraved portraits of public men, many of which circulated in books and periodicals in the nineteenth century. The card gives no date, so the image is best read as an engraved likeness of a state congressman rather than a record of a specific event. It still shows how such portraits presented elected officials to a wide public.
