James Francis Edward Stuart, known to his supporters as the "Old Pretender," was the son of the deposed James II of England and the claimant to the British throne after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 removed his father. This photoprint reproduces a painted portrait of him, and the image carries the political weight that such likenesses held in the eighteenth century, when Jacobite supporters circulated portraits of the exiled prince as a symbol of their hopes for a Stuart restoration. The caption card carries no date, so the photograph's own age is uncertain, though it records a copy of an older painting. Viewers should treat the identification as the card's claim, since the record itself is unverified.
