George Frisbie Hoar was a Massachusetts Republican who served in the U.S. Senate for more than three decades, and this portrait, dated around May 1899, shows him in his later years as one of the most respected figures in Congress. The picture comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, which holds the work of the photographer who became known for documenting politicians, writers and public life in Washington during the 1890s. Hoar was known for his independent streak, especially his opposition to the annexation of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War, and portraits of him from this period capture the bearing of a senator at the height of his influence.
