A carte de visite of George Washington Campbell, who held the office of secretary of the treasury in 1814, reproduces an earlier portrait of him in the role. Campbell, a Tennessee lawyer and senator, took over Treasury at a difficult moment in the War of 1812, when the government was struggling to pay for the war and borrowing had become costly. He left the post later that year, and his tenure is often remembered as a brief and troubled one. The card format, popular from the 1860s through the 1870s, let families and collectors own affordable copies of portraits of public figures, many of whom had died decades earlier.
