Pyle's Dietetic Saleratus was a leavening product sold as a healthful alternative to ordinary baking ingredients, and this 1867 wood engraving was made to promote it. The name "dietetic" was a common selling point in the period, when manufacturers claimed their goods were wholesome as well as useful in the kitchen. Saleratus, a form of baking soda, was widely used in American homes by the 1860s, and labels like this one show how producers competed for buyers through bold, detailed imagery. The record also files the print under patent medicines, a reminder of how loosely household remedies and food products were marketed in that era.
