Laufenburg sits on a bend of the upper Rhine, where the river narrows through a rocky passage and the town is split between Germany and Switzerland, with a bridge joining the two halves. This graphite drawing views the town from the German bank, looking toward the southwest, and it shows the rough riverbed that long made this stretch hard for boats. The record gives no date, and the shelflist card links the work to a name, Fenderich, though that attribution is unverified. Drawings of Rhine towns like this one were popular with nineteenth-century travelers, who prized them as records of picturesque river scenery.
