The notes on the back of this print identify the platform as the grave of Hairy Wolf's wife, a Crow burial raised off the ground rather than placed in it. Scaffold burials were common among several Plains peoples, including the Apsaroke, as the Crow called themselves, and elevating the dead was meant to keep remains away from animals. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph around 1908 for *The North American Indian*, where it appears in volume 4, and it stands as one of the records he made of mortuary practices in Montana during those years.
