Perched over the rushing water of the Columbia River, this platform shows the Wishram fishing method, with its nets and weirs set into the current. Such platforms, built above the rapids near Celilo Falls, were long-used fishing grounds for Wishram families, who relied on salmon runs for food for many generations. Edward S. Curtis made the picture around 1910 for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, where it appeared as plate 102 in a supplement volume. The image is a useful record of a subsistence practice that ended after dams flooded the falls in the 1950s.
