Rip and his dog at the water's edge make up this scene from Frank T. Merrill's illustrations for Washington Irving's *Rip Van Winkle*, published in Boston in 1888 and found on page 14. Irving first printed the tale in 1819. It follows a farmer from the Catskill Mountains who sleeps for twenty years and wakes to a village changed by the Revolution. Merrill, an American illustrator, drew the pictures for an edition of a story that was widely read and often reissued, and this early scene shows the easygoing idler whose laziness sets up the tale's supernatural turn.
