Few printed pages are as plain as this set: a frontispiece, a title page, and five pages of text (numbers 145 to 149) from the first volume of the *Riverside Magazine for Young People*. Published in New York in the late 1860s by Hurd and Houghton, with Horace Elisha Scudder as editor, the magazine offered stories and verse to American children at a time when juvenile periodicals were gaining readers. The caption card gives no date, and this volume carries no illustrations, so the pages offer a straightforward view of the typography and layout of postwar children's publishing.
