Labeled as the second picture in a series, this platinum print shows Mother Jones, the labor organizer born Mary Harris Jones, whose dates the record gives as 1843? to 1930. It was made around 1902, the year of the major anthracite coal strike in Pennsylvania, when she was a prominent advocate for miners and their families. Platinum printing was prized in that decade for its soft tonal range and matte surface. The copyright notice names Bertha Howell, and the image shows how portraits helped shape the public identity of a figure who drew both devotion and alarm from the press.
