Gum bichromate printing, the technique behind this softly textured image, layered pigment over a paper base and let the photographer manipulate tone and brushwork by hand, which made it popular with pictorialists in the early 1900s who wanted their photographs to read as art rather than mechanical record. This print is dated about 1903 and signed in the lower right, though its catalog card is unverified and its original source is unknown. Its subject, a mother and child, was one of the most common themes in turn-of-the-century pictorial photography, where tender domestic scenes were used to show emotional warmth and craft. The blurred edges and rich, uneven surface are worth studying as evidence of the handwork involved.
