A young girl posed with a leafy oak branch gives this platinum print its character, with the branch serving as both prop and emblem. The photographer signed it with the monogram EW, and the title was given when the image was published. Platinum printing, prized around 1900 for its soft tonal range and matte surface, was a favorite of pictorialist photographers who treated portraits as artistic compositions. Frances Benjamin Johnston gave the print to the Library of Congress in 1948 as part of her collection of artistic photographs.
