A small boy stands on a stool with a dunce cap on his head while an older girl sits calmly among scattered books, a staged scene that turns the schoolroom punishment of public shame into a joke. Photographs like this were often arranged for stereograph cards, which were viewed through a double-lens viewer and sold in large numbers in the early twentieth century. Around 1908, such genre scenes of children at lessons and play were a popular way to show domestic and school life. The caption card's subject tags, "Students" and "Books and reading," suggest the card was meant to be read as a comic lesson about study habits.
