A small ink, wash, and graphite drawing, measuring 22.7 by 13.7 centimeters, shows a figure seated on a throne and holding a staff, a pose that echoes the imperial imagery associated with Napoleon Bonaparte and his era. The Library's staff devised the title, so the Napoleonic identification is a reasonable reading rather than a confirmed fact. The artist's name, written in pencil at the lower right, has not been deciphered, and an inscription on the back records that the drawing came to the Library as a deposit from Joseph Verner Reed. Together these details make it a modest example of how Napoleonic iconography was taken up in drawn form in the decades between the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
