A young girl smiles at the camera while holding a doll, a simple domestic moment recorded in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic around 1950. The caption card lists the subjects as Armenians and dolls, but the record is unverified, so little is known about the child or where the picture was taken. In those years Armenia was one of the republics of the Soviet Union, and photographs of everyday childhood like this one often appeared in state publications and the foreign press, where they could present Soviet life as orderly and cheerful. Today the picture is worth noticing for its ordinary subject as much as for its political setting.
