Here Winston Churchill appears as a boy, in a reproduction of a painting by Marcel Vertès rather than a photograph of the child himself. Churchill was born in 1874 at Blenheim Palace, into an aristocratic family, and would go on to lead Britain through the Second World War. Vertès, a Hungarian-born painter and illustrator, built his reputation on polished portraits and magazine work in Paris and the United States during the twentieth century. The record does not give a date for the original painting, so the picture is best read as an artist's later interpretation of Churchill's childhood.
