The title casts the Second Bank of the United States as a sick patient, "Mother U.S. Bank," tended by a row of physicians. Congress had chartered the bank, and Nicholas Biddle ran it, but President Andrew Jackson vetoed its recharter in 1832 and moved to pull federal deposits from it. Anthony Imbert published this lithograph at his Broadway caricature shop in 1833, when the fight was at its height. Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun and Biddle are the figures named in the record, and the print turns a dispute over banking and public money into a bedside scene.
