The wood engraving captures the launch of the Challenge, a ship that drew attention as New York shipyards turned out fast clippers in the early 1850s. American builders were then winning a reputation for speed on the Atlantic and China routes. The print ran in The Illustrated American News in June 1851, a weekly that used engravings like this one to report on current events for its readers. Launches of large wooden vessels were public occasions, and a picture like this one shows how the press brought such moments to a wider audience.
