A wounded man is being carried toward a waiting ambulance in Union Square, New York, in this March 1908 photograph. The caption identifies him as a casualty of an anarchist riot, part of a period of unrest in the city after the Panic of 1907 left many workers unemployed and drew radical groups into the streets. Press photographers such as George Grantham Bain, whose news pictures make up this collection, recorded scenes like this for newspapers, so the print is valuable as a document of how street disorder was seen and reported in the period.
