A young woman in a guerrilla unit stands on guard duty in this photograph, a role that the caption card's "Women--War Work" tracing points to as one of the many ways women took part in the conflict. The record dates the image to about 1953, during the First Indochina War, when Viet Minh forces fought French colonial troops across Vietnam. Women served in militia and guerrilla formations, carrying out sentry, supply, and support work alongside male fighters. The caption data is old and unverified, so the exact unit, location, and photographer remain unknown.
