A peep into futurity, or a picture of 1841 does not show the present. Its title promises a glimpse of 1841, the year Martin Van Buren's term as president would end, so the print turns a political attack into a prophecy. H.R. Robinson published it in New York in 1838, when Van Buren, Andrew Jackson's chosen successor, was under heavy criticism after the Panic of 1837 damaged the economy. The hand-applied watercolor over the lithograph was common for prints of the day, and it shows how such cartoons were colored to draw buyers' attention. The future Van Buren faced turned out to be defeat in 1840, when the Whigs elected William Henry Harrison.
