Wagons and walking figures make their way down Big Mountain into Mountain Dell, the steep approach that brought the 1847 company toward the Salt Lake Valley. Brigham Young's advance party had reached the valley on July 24, 1847, after a long trek west from Winter Quarters, and the descent through the Wasatch foothills was among the last difficult stretches of that journey. The record dates the picture to about 1912, roughly 65 years after the event, and the copyright credit to Harry A. Kelley suggests it was likely a later, commemorative rendering of the scene rather than a view made on the spot.
