This plan of Djerba, the Tunisian island the record calls Jarbah, shows the shoals and sandbars that the title says guarded it against the sea. Its subjects point to the naval campaign of 1560, when a Spanish-led fleet under Andrea Doria tried to take the island from the Ottomans and was defeated in the shallow waters around it. The print was made well after that clash, and its date is given only as the 1600s, so it likely reflects the engraver's later view of the battle rather than a firsthand survey. Its interest lies in how it combines a map of the island with the hazards that shaped the fighting.
